Finding the Connection

Finding the ConnectionI’ve only met my grandfather once when I was three years old. Almost twenty years later, his mysterious existence and absence dawned on me with a curious fascination, leading me to uncover the stories that he left behind.

The world of peasantry and simplicity was evident in Carolina, a place where a young boy would sit on the dry, solid dirt floor in his home and play with homemade wooden stick figurines, or would run about outdoors, kicking a raggedy, dirt-laden soccer ball made of old socks.

Taking the Knee

The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter CollegeA little over a year ago, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem to protest police shootings and racial discrimination against innocent black lives in black neighborhoods. Though his protest has not only spurred other players to engage in nonviolent protests this season, whether kneeling or sitting on the bench, it has also led players to raise their fists as well as interlock their arms with one another during the anthem.

Eighteen-year-old Melissa Hildalgo, a freshman from the Bronx, dressed in a thin grey cardigan and wearing light blue jeans, expressed enthusiasm when she was interviewed. “I’m very excited to meet new people. I’m very open to finding new friends, so anyone out there who wants a friend, I’m Melissa and I’m in desperate need of friends,” she said, giggling at her response near the library entrance on the third floor of the sky bridge.
